Trichophyton tonsurans is unique because of its microconidia's marked size and morphological variability, which may be round, tear-shaped, cigar-shaped, or swollen and enlarged.
The top right image shows a T. tonsurans culture plate, showing a wrinkled appearance at the colony's center. Overall, the colony exhibits a glabrous or smooth, velvety appearance and its characteristic yellowish-beige coloration. The bottom right image shows a T. tonsurans lactophenol cotton blue preparation, demonstrating macroconidia and filamentous hyphae.
34. CDC. (Nd.). Image #15510. This photograph of a Petri dish culture revealed some of the morphology exhibited by a Trichophyton tonsurans fungal colony. Though the colony displayed a wrinkled appearance at its center, note that overall, the colony exhibited a glabrous, velvety appearance and a characteristic yellowish-beige coloration. Under a magnification of 475X, this photomicrograph revealed some of the ultrastructural characteristics of the dermatophytic fungus, Trichophyton tonsurans. Of note, were the numbers of the organism’s elongated, multicellular macroconidia, and filamentous, septate, hyaline hyphae. PHIL public domain. https://phil.cdc.gov/Details.aspx?pid=15410
