Tier 1 biological agents are a subset of select agents and toxins that present the GREATEST risk of deliberate misuse with SIGNIFICANT potential for mass casualties or devastating effects (to the economy, infrastructure, public confidence) and POSE A THREAT TO PUBLIC HEALTH and SAFETY.
Examples of Tier 1 agents are:
- Bacillus anthracis
- Burkholderia mallei
- Burkholderia pseudomallei
- Bacillus cereus Biovar anthracis
- Botulinum neurotoxin producing strains of Clostridium
- Francisella tularensis
- Marburg virus
- Ebola virus
- Yersinia pestis
- Variola major and minor viruses
