Epidemiology: TB and LTBI in the World

Epidemiology (distribution and burden of disease) globally is reported as:
TB disease incidence:
9.9 million people were reported to have TB disease globally in 2020. Eight high-burden countries (Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, and South Africa) account for two-thirds of this total. Globally, TB incidence is falling at a rate of about 2% per year (WHO, 2021). Each year, approximately 1.6 million people die of active TB disease (CDC, 2021).
LTBI prevalence:
One-third of the world’s population has latent TB infection (LTBI), according to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2015). These individuals are not yet symptomatic and are unable to transmit the bacteria.
