Exercise 6: Fire

Preparation
Assign an observer and individuals that would be present at the time of the event or who would be contacted during the event.
The individuals participating in the event should focus on following the procedure in place for such an event and should consider:
  • Staff and patient safety
  • Communication
  • Equipment
  • Personnel
  • Utilities
  • Initial response
Scenario
It is 10:00 AM on Tuesday in the Microbiology Laboratory.
  1. At 10:05 AM, staff noticed smoke coming from a safety hood.
  2. At 10:10 AM, a staff member notices flames from the hood.
  3. At 10:15 AM, the power is cut and the flames are extinguished.
  4. At 12:00 PM, the power is restored.
Note: allow participants to react to each individual event in the scenario before moving to another event.
