Graves' Disease

Mechanism:
  • Autoimmunity
    • Production of thyrotropin receptor antibody (TRAb) will override the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
    • Production of thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) to stimulate thyroid hormone production by acting like TSH
  • Leads to HYPERthyroidism
Symptoms:
  • Exophthalmos (proptosis) - abnormal protrusion of the eyeball(s)
  • Anxiety and nervousness
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Rapid heartbeat
Prevalence:
  • Female-to-male ratio of 8:1
  • Approximately 0.5% of the population
  • Likely under age 40 at diagnosis
