Similar to other pituitary hormones, the first standardized methods to measure prolactin employed radioimmunoassay principles. Modern immunoassays largely employ chemilumiescent modes of detection, which provide the analytical sensitivity to distinguish between low-normal and diminished secretion of the hormone.
