Researchers at the Iran University of Medical Sciences have shown that treatments with zinc oxide nanoparticles are successful at inhibiting influenza H1N1 in laboratory cell cultures. This research corresponds with previous research on zinc as an anti-viral mineral. Multiple studies have shown, both in the laboratory and direct patient care, that zinc can reduce a respiratory infection's viral load and symptoms. Vitamin C and vitamin D have both been shown in laboratory and clinical research to reduce the duration of influenza.
Nutraceuticals have been used to group various nutrients believed to have a health benefit. These can include minerals, vitamins, herbs, and plant extracts. Research suggests that these can control RNA viruses, including influenza and coronavirus. Herbs that have also been shown to have documented activity against viruses include oregano, elderberry, licorice, astragalus, sage, basil, fennel, garlic, lemon balm, peppermint, rosemary, and echinacea. An in-depth analysis examining the multiple types of alternative treatments is beyond the scope of this session.
