A general definition of productivity can be defined as the ratio of services and/or products produced (output) to the resources consumed (input). Using this definition, productivity is dependent on six factors. Those factors are:
  • People
  • Automation and equipment
  • Materials
  • Environment
  • Management
  • Process
The measurement and analysis of these six variables are used to determine the reasons for a problem in productivity, irrespective of its type or severity.3
Productivity can also be defined by a group of other factors such as quality, speed of service, test menu acceptability to providers, and laboratory staff cooperativeness internally and externally. Individual laboratories may be able to identify additional factors based on their circumstances.
Setting benchmark standards for the productivity factors identified requires internal and external research. Setting benchmarks and measurement processes require input from all levels of laboratory personnel. In addition, processes for identifying reasons for failures to meet benchmarks and methods to correct such failures need to be designed.
This course will describe measurement methods for productivity factors, methods for identifying problems in productivity, and solutions to identified productivity issues. It will also provide some tips for improving productivity.
