Spherocytes are red cells that have a decreased surface-to-volume ratio. As a result, this type of cell is denser than a normal red cell and on a Wright-stained smear, in the proper viewing area, they appear to be round, darkly-stained cells without central pallor. Two spherocytes are indicated by the arrows on this peripheral blood smear image.
