Calculated Estimates of GFR

In routine practice, GFR is estimated using calculations that employ measurement of endogenous compounds exhibiting many, if not most, of the characteristics of an ideal biomarker of renal function.
Creatinine is the primary endogenous compound measured to determine estimated GFR (eGFR) in clinical practice.
Other markers, such as cystatin C, are becoming more common.
