Dysplastic Granulocytic Cell Line (Dysgranulopoiesis)

Normal neutrophils have 3–5 lobes and demonstrate the presence of secondary neutrophilic (pink) granules (please refer to the image on the right).
Dysplastic neutrophils may show:
  • Abnormal neutrophil sizes
  • Nuclear hypo-segmentation or hyper-segmentation
  • Decreased cytoplasmic granules (hypo-granular)
  • Pseudo-Chediak-Higashi granules (abnormally large azurophilic granules)
  • Auer rods
Examples of Dysplastic Granulocytic Cells:
Hypo-granular, hypo-segmented neutrophil
Hypogranular neutrophils
Hypersegmented neutrophil
