Normal neutrophils have 3–5 lobes and demonstrate the presence of secondary neutrophilic (pink) granules (please refer to the image on the right).
Dysplastic neutrophils may show:
- Abnormal neutrophil sizes
- Nuclear hypo-segmentation or hyper-segmentation
- Decreased cytoplasmic granules (hypo-granular)
- Pseudo-Chediak-Higashi granules (abnormally large azurophilic granules)
- Auer rods
Examples of Dysplastic Granulocytic Cells:
Hypo-granular, hypo-segmented neutrophil
Hypogranular neutrophils
Hypersegmented neutrophil
