Non-Metabolic Roles of the Thyroid

Special cells within the thyroid, called C cells or parafollicular cells, produce a hormone called calcitonin. Calcitonin helps to regulate the metabolism of calcium and to maintain the integrity and density of the bones.
The thyroid is also responsible for regulating sleep. Excess production of thyroid hormones causes restlessness and insomnia.
