Hemostatic Agents

There are several antifibrinolytic drugs that can be used during surgery that can reduce bleeding. These include:

  • Tranexamic acid -synthetic antifibrinolytic (TA)
  • epislon amino caproic acid (EACA)
  • *Aprotinin -factor XIII - fibrinogen / calcium chloride dihydrate - thrombin
  • *Aprotinin was removed from the US market but it still used in other countries.

The cost of these agents are significant and not all facilities will have them available.
