Interpretation of CBC and Additional Lab Results

The CBC revealed leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and slight anemia. The RBC count and hematocrit were slightly decreased, whereas the platelet count was more profoundly decreased. All WBC lines seemed to be affected, raising the possibility of bone marrow dysfunction.
Additional tests, however, shed more light on this case:
  • Among the chemistry tests, the two out-of-range tests were the AST and ALT, both of which were mildly elevated.
  • The tests for influenza and COVID-19 were negative.
  • The blood smear revealed the most diagnostic feature.
