Testing for Immunodeficiencies

Many types of immunodeficiencies can be tested for in the lab. The International Union of Immunologic Societies (IUIS) has established nine categories of immunodeficiencies based on patient symptoms and laboratory results. They are:
  • Combined Immunodeficiencies
  • Combined Immunodeficiencies with Associated or Syndromic Features
  • Predominantly Antibody Deficiencies
  • Diseases of Immune Dysregulation
  • Congenital Defects of Phagocyte Number, Function, or Both
  • Defects in Innate Immunity
  • Autoinflammatory Diseases
  • Complement Deficiencies
  • Phenocopies of Primary Immunodeficiencies
Testing for these diseases is highly varied and includes CBC, flow cytometric analyses, immunoassays, phagocytosis and bacterial killing assays, specific complement component assays, and many others.
