Specimen Integrity

As soon as the donor gives the specimen to the collector, the collector must check for three things:

  1. Specimen is within acceptable temperature range.
  2. The acceptable temperature range is 90-100° F or 32-38°C.
  3. Volume of specimen is sufficient.
  4. A minimum of 45mL is required for Federally-regulated collections; 30 mL for Non-regulated collections.
  5. There are no signs of tampering or adulteration of specimen.
  6. Check for unusual color, presence of foreign objects or material, and unusual odors such as bleach.
