Matching Donors with Transplant Recipients

The National Marrow Donor Program uses a computer software program, HapLogic™, to evaluate allogeneic donors and calculate a probability that a potentially matched HSC donor or cord blood unit, will result in a match for a searching patient. The software searches through millions of data records to develop a list of prospective donors. The software also converts the older serologic data to the new format used for reporting HLA testing by DNA methodology. In 2008, the NMDP had 59% of volunteer donors with DNA-based results, 23% with a mix of serologic and DNA-based results, and 18% with serologic-only results. As new donors are added to the Registry and older donors become ineligible, there will be fewer serologic-only results.
