Scenario: The Football Rivalry – Discussion

Todd’s first comment, right after the game, uses some inappropriate language. Still, as a single comment in the context of a friendly rivalry, it doesn’t rise to the level of abusive conduct or create a hostile work environment.
But when Todd keeps up the conduct, even after Jim has asked him to “drop it,” it becomes more serious. And when Todd undermines Jim’s idea in the meeting and sabotages his participation on the new project, it has escalated into repeated abusive conduct and a hostile work environment.
Todd must be disciplined for his inappropriate and abusive conduct in accordance with your company’s policy. He may even be terminated for his actions toward Jim.
