Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

Mechanism
  • Autoimmune - Antibody (Ab) develops to:
    • Thyroperoxidase (TPOAb) 90%, and
    • Thyroglobulin (TgAb) 85%
  • Highest TPOAb levels found in Hashimoto's thyroiditis
  • Leads to HYPOthyroidism
Symptoms
  • Weight gain/inability to lose weight
  • Depression, especially post-partum
Prevalence
  • 0.3 – 1.2% of general population in the United States
  • Female to male ratio - 12:1
