Basic Math Applications in the Histology Laboratory

Math is used in a variety of ways in the histology laboratory, depending upon the equipment, procedures, and resources of each individual laboratory. Mathematical calculations may be used for:
  • Converting measurements within the metric system
  • Converting Fahrenheit temperature readings to Celsius
  • Preparation of fixative solutions
  • Preparation of staining solutions
  • Dilution of stock solutions to working solutions
  • Serial dilution of IHC antibodies
  • Preparation of stains using dry dyes
