Structure of the Thyroid Gland

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland which contains two main lobes that are connected by a thin layer of connective tissue called the isthmus. The gland is somewhat asymmetrical, and is highly vascular (rich in blood vessels)to facilitate the delivery of the produced hormones to the target tissues throughout the body.
