Identifying a Champion

The most critical step in the process is to identify physicians who are supporters of a patient blood management program. Ideally, the champion is also a formal or informal leader within the institution. The role of the Champion is to remove roadblocks for the implementation of policies, processes and procedures to ensure blood transfusions are appropriate and all measures to reduce transfusion are implemented. They are cheerleaders with authority.
