Post-Operative Blood Reinfusion

Collection and reinfusion of shed blood post-operatively is controversial. The collection rarely provides for the infusion of the equivalent of one unit of red blood cells. This could be a cost effective way to prevent allogeneic transfusions if those patients who will have more bleeding could be predicted. Post-operative reinfusion is most often used in orthopedic surgery.
