Case of Indian Trypanosomiasis

  • 40 year-old farmer who worked with livestock in Chandrapur, India
  • Had never left home
  • Presented with fever and sensory disorders
  • Blood smear demonstrated trypanosomes but the parasites disappeared after day 2 only to reappear on day 10
  • Patient had fever spikes 7-10 days apart for 5 months
  • No central nervous system involvement found
  • Neither T. brucei or T. cruzi is found in India and there are no other trypanosomes seen in humans
