Resolution of Case 4

  • After 24 hours of appropriate treatment (suramin) number of trypanosomes dropped
  • CSF exam was normal with no trypanosomes
  • Patient became edematous, liver enzymes were increased and bilirubin was high (13.1 mg/dL)
  • After 3 days of feeling very ill, he began to improve
  • He was discharged after 1 week
  • Slight scar remained where the lesion healed
  • Testing of his CSF was scheduled for every 3-6 months for 18-24 months
