  • Hyperparasitemia
  • Infects all ages of RBCs asynchronously
  • Significantly low platelet counts; no coagulopathy
  • Severe malaria occurs in 7% of cases
  • Misdiagnosis as P. malariae, benign malaria, may delay aggressive treatment
  • Detected by rapid antigen tests
  • Phylogenically closest to P. vivax
  • Clinically similar to P. falciparum
  • Early ring forms resemble P. falciparum
  • Later stages mimic P. malariae
