  • 50 year-old woman born in the Philippines but had lived in the United States for 25 years
  • Visited friends and relatives on the island of Palawan, Philippines
  • Stayed at the edge of a forrested area where long-tailed macaques lived
  • Failed to take malaria chemoprophylaxis or use insecticide treated mosquito nets
  • When she returned to the U.S., she reprted headache, chills and fever
  • In the ED in New York City she was hypotensive and had thrombocytopenia
  • Thick and thin blood smears showed the parasites on the next slide
