Bone Marrow Procurement: Supplies

Individual collection techniques can vary. Generally, the clinician reviews with the patient the necessity for sample collection, obtains an informed consent for the procedure, sedation is administered if ordered, and an assessment of the patient's anatomy is performed.
Sterile technique is maintained while obtaining a bone marrow biopsy. Common items used for collection may be included on a "bone marrow tray" that is sterilized. A list of items on the tray may include, but is not limited to:
  • Bone marrow biopsy needle
  • Bone marrow aspiration needle
  • Syringes for administering lidocaine and for collection of the aspirate
  • Scalpel
  • Slides
  • Gauze
