Portal Tracts: Portal Vein

The portal vein provides a large percentage of the blood supply to the liver; the remaining blood is supplied to the liver via the hepatic artery. Additionally, the portal vein transports any material absorbed through the intestines to the liver. Compromised or obstructed blood flow to the liver can result in ischemia. Ischemia leads to damaged hepatocytes.
