Normal Cell Counts

Normal adult CSF may have up to 5 WBCs/µL. Children have slightly higher counts, while in newborns a count of up to 30 WBCs/µL is within normal limits.

CSF containing up to 200 WBCs/µL or 400 RBCs/µL may appear clear or only slightly hazy, so all specimens must be examined microscopically.
