Causes of Xanthochromia in Premature Infants

Xanthochromia may also be present in the cerebrospinal fluid of premature infants. Reasons for this include:

  • Elevated bilirubin in the blood
  • Immaturity of the blood-brain barrier
  • Elevated protein in CSF
