Holzer's Crystal Violet Staining - Diagnostics

There are four types of glial cells:
  • Astrocytes
  • Oligosendroglia
  • Microglia
  • Ependymal cells
Pathologists requesting stains for glial cells are often looking for astrocytes. Injury and disease of the central nervous system (CNS) associated with astrocytes such as astrocytoma can be identified using Holzer's crystal violet staining method.
