Histology of the Nervous System: Neurofibrillary Tangles (NFTs)

Neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) form inside the neuron and are composed of abnormally processed tau proteins. It is believed that when they clump inside the cell, it causes the neuron to become stressed and die. The presence of NFTs in nervous tissues is recognized as a primary marker of Alzheimer's disease.
