Verhoeff-Van Gieson (VVG) Staining - Diagnostic Applications

The VVG staining method is useful in demonstrating atrophy of elastic tissue. Atrophy of elastic tissue can be caused by arteriosclerotic changes, tumor invasion, and other vascular diseases. As we age, changes in elastic tissue occur, such as splitting and fragmentation. These transformations are readily seen in the skin, which becomes wrinkled or loose.
