Symptoms of Gonorrhea

  • Most men are symptomatic with urethritis and purulent discharge
  • 50-80% of women are not symptomatic
    Vaginal discharge, mucopurulent cervicitis or asymptomatic in females
  • Can cause pharyngitis and proctitis in men and women
  • Sequelae to infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeaeis comparable to that of Chlamydia trachomatis
    • PID
    • Ectopic pregnancy
    • Sterility
  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae is able to undergo antigen and phase variation by changing its pili to evade host defenses
