Epidemiology of Sexually Transmitted Chlamydia Infections

  • Sexually active teenagers and young adults are at greatest risk
  • Up to 30% of urban young women may be infected
  • Prevalence overall is 6.8%
  • 4.4% among non-Hispanic whites
  • 16.2% among non-Hispanic blacks
  • Up to one third are also infected with gonorrhea
  • 5 times more common in women than men
  • Young people 14-25 years of age are 3 times more likely to be infected than those over 25 years of age
