Diagram of PCR Process

The diagram on the right illustrates the entire PCR process. Notice that the primers are complementary to the flanking sides of the DNA sequence of interest. This allows for the Taq polymerase to synthesize the complementary strand, resulting in exponential duplication of the original DNA segment.
