Table 2: MCV Classification

Cell TypeImageCellular DescriptionAssociated Diseases and Conditions

  • MCV 80–100 fL
  • Approximately the same size as the nucleus of a small lymphocyte
Normocytic red cells are the expected result, but there are conditions that display normocytes, such as:
  • Hemolytic anemias
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Aplastic anemia
  • Leukemias
Microcyte
  • MCV <80 fL
  • Red blood cells are smaller than normal
  • Iron deficiency anemia
  • Sideroblastic anemia
  • Certain thalassemias
  • Lead poisoning
  • Certain hemoglobinopathies
Macrocyte
  • MCV >100 fL
  • Red blood cells are larger than normal
  • Megaloblastic anemia (Vitamin B12/Folate deficiency)
  • Myelodysplasia
  • Liver disease
