Introduction to Performance Evaluation

Performance evaluation of laboratory workers is required by all agencies that regulate laboratories. Each organization or place of employment has a performance management system. The overall performance management process helps to establish employee behavior that fits into the organization specific strategic plans. The performance evaluation process is a part of the organization's performance management system. Performance evaluation is the assessment of job expectations for each employee. Each employee is assessed on a schedule as per the employer guidelines and schedule. The assessment of performance is an ongoing process throughout employment. Each employee is provided with a set of management's expectations for the specific position. These expectations are established prior to hiring and are often included in the job description. The expectations are shared with prospective employees and incorporated into the hiring and orientation/training process. The evaluation process is completed by management personnel as per the job expectations of management personnel.
Performance evaluations are appropriate for all personnel. This includes not only laboratory staff but also supervisors, managers, consultants, as well as individuals who provide supplemental professional services.
