Parasite density usually correlates with severity of illness. For thick smears, the number of parasites/μL of blood is determined by counting the number of parasites in relation to the standard number of WBCs/μL (8000):
Number of Parasites x (8000 ÷ No. WBCs counted) = Number of parasites per μL of blood
