Jones' Methenamine Silver Stain (JMS) - Diagnostic Applications

The Jones' Methenamine Silver Stain (JMS) is used to demonstrate glomerular basement membrane in sections of kidney. Basement membranes are a type of connective tissue that epithelial cells rest upon. In the kidney, glomerular basement membranes serve as filters. Thickened glomerular basement membrane are often a sign of kidney disease and diabetes. These membranes are significantly difficult to distinguish with H&E staining.
