Transfusion Reactions Associated with Blood Products

Transfusion reactions may be associated more often with a particular blood product. For example,
  • Acute hemolysis is generally associated with Red Cell transfusions. Non-immune hemolysis as well as immune-mediated hemolysis may occur with Red Cell transfusions.
  • Transfusion related acute lung injury (TRALI) and allergic reactions are more commonly seen in transfusions that contain larger amounts of plasma proteins.
  • Platelets are the most common component implicated in posttransfusion sepsis due to the fact that platelet products are stored at room temperature (20 – 24º C).
