Simulations/Mock Events

The major focus of a simulation or mock event is to:
  • Determine if the procedures can be performed as written.
  • Test if there are resources available to perform the tasks.
  • Assess the interactions and decision making of the staff.
This exercise involves:
  • Decision making individuals representing each group that could be involved
  • An observer who documents decisions and assesses group interaction
  • A topic related scenario with set events happening in a timed sequence
  • The scene where then events will actually occur
  • Resources that would be available should the event occur
No patients are involved in this exercise.
Examples of these type of exercises include mock fire, flood, equipment alarm, loss of water to instruments, emergency release of blood components, and the loss of the laboratory computer system.
