Types of Practice Events

Practice events range in scope and involvement from tabletop exercises that are limited to the potential events in the laboratory to full scale events involving simulated patients, the hospital, as well as local, regional, and state emergency management organizations. The hospital is required to participate in coordinated events, as well as practice using other events. The scope and application of the following event types will be discussed:
  • Tabletop exercise
  • Simulations/mock events
  • Modular or component exercises
  • Comprehensive events
As the scope of the exercise increases, the number of groups participating will also increase, requiring a longer lead time for planning. Simple laboratory oriented exercises should be performed periodically to test procedures and group readiness. Exercises can focus on events that may not routinely occur in the laboratory setting, but have great patient impact, such as the emergency release of blood, computer system(s) are down, or when there is water leak.
