Medications (Anti- Seizure & Diuretics)

Anti-seizure and Mood-altering Drugs

The anti-seizure drugs carbamazepine (Tegretol) and phenytoin (Dilantin) have been associated with a reduction in bone density and this is believed to be due to low vitamin D and decreased intestinal absorption of calcium.
Diuretics
Furosemide (Lasix), is commonly used to treat the fluid retention and swelling caused by heart failure. It works by increasing urinary output and promotes calcium excretion from the kidneys. As a result, they have been associated with reduced bone mineral density at the hip.
